There are six kinds of conversation. Teaching. Sharing. Debriefing. Clearing. Discussion and/or debate. And coaching.
The coaching conversation takes place when people explore what they want in the future and choose ways to attain it–without getting advice.
In the context of a coaching relationship, we do many different things: exploring, problem solving, creative thinking, generating multiple options (including contradictory ones), and experimenting with new strategies and techniques. Sometimes coaching simply means that coach listens fully and occasionally feeds back what they hear which is a huge gift for you, the client. Through this activity, my purpose (as coach) is to generate your next new action–something that does not happen in sharing, debriefing and debate, or teaching.
