To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Intermittently, I enjoy finding a face-paced, vinyasa flow yoga class. In those classes, I am surrounded by 72.7% Caucasian women with a college degree with an annual earning of $50,000+ on average, age 20-55, interested in muscle tone, stress-reduction, weight loss and flexibility.
Typically, this is who we’re surrounded by in the typical Westernized yoga class room.
However, that is not the typical Western population.
You might have aches and pains and extra pounds and interested in yoga for mobility, mindfulness, flexibility, pain relief. Maybe you’re a young person, self-conscious and shy and wanting higher self-esteem. Maybe you’re older–say, 70 or 80–wanting to increase balance and reduce your risk of falling.
When you walk into my yoga class I’m HONORED, PROUD, and INSPIRED by you. Because it takes a certain amount of courage to “break” social norms.
